In October 2023, we celebrated our 35th anniversary. Although we formalized our Corporate Social Responsibility initiative over the past few years, I can proudly say we have practiced it since our founding. At Contec, we understand the importance of integrating the wellbeing of our associates and community, and our impact on the environment, into our business operations. We believe that businesses have a responsibility to positively contribute to the communities in which they operate and to minimize their environmental impact.
We continue to employ sustainable practices in our operations, through energy-efficient technologies, reducing waste generation, and promoting recycling initiatives. In 2023 we had several accomplishments in this area:
- Our breakthrough project in 2023 was the significant reduction of our largest hazardous waste stream – process scrap of presaturated wipers. This recycling process involved the installation of a centrifuge to separate isopropyl alcohol, water, and fabric from presaturated wipers and no longer required hazardous waste disposal.
- We produced 1,932,832.23 kWh of solar energy allowing us to manufacture products with renewable energy and offset our electrical usage.
- We achieved 100% landfill free status at all of our manufacturing and distribution center facilities in the United States.
In 2024 our projects include evaluating the expansion of the centrifuge process and a wastewater recycling system. We are dedicated to continuously improving our CSR efforts and creating transparency as we look to implement Science Based Targets initiatives and complete an Ecovadis assessment in 2024.
We continue our investing in the communities where we operate. We consistently contribute to charitable causes, supporting 73 charitable organizations in 2023 and exceeding our United Way contribution goal. Our associates continued volunteering in the community serving over 2,500 hours in 2023, a staggering 212% increase over 2022. By investing in the well-being of our communities, we can create long-term value for both society and our business.
As we continue to grow and evolve as a company, our commitment to CSR remains steadfast. We recognize that CSR is not a project but a journey, and we will continue making improvements that positively impact our company, our people, and our community.
